Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students Samantha Barzilai, Daniel Claffey, Andreanna Mancini and Melissa Mandel who were recently selected as January Students of the Month.
Every month, students from the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes are nominated by their classmates for the award, which is based on students’ character, integrity and leadership qualities.
Freshman Andreanna Mancini was chosen to receive the distinction because she is “an excellent role model and friend to all of her peers,” according to Freshmen Class President Cateyann Bernhard. As a freshman, Andreanna is currently taking several honors and pre-Advanced Placement courses and is an active member of the school community. She is a member of the band, Art Honor Society and Habitat for Humanity and is looking forward to playing softball in the spring.
Sophomore Class President Ally Haddad described her classmate, Samantha Barzilai, as a kind, friendly student who is always willing to help others. “She has a lot of spirit and brings a positive attitude into the school,” she said. Samantha echoed that sentiment, noting that it’s important for her to be a beacon of positivity for others. She is also dedicated to maintaining good grades and seeks out extra help in order to do so.
Junior Daniel Claffey was nominated based on similar characteristics. “He is super nice to everyone and is great to be around,” Junior Class President Robbie Spelman said. Daniel plays three sports, including football, basketball and lacrosse, and is also a member of student council, Natural Helpers, Freshmen Buddies and Habitat for Humanity.
Senior Melissa Mandel is equally involved in after school clubs and extra curriculars. As a vocalist and saxophone player, she has performed at the high school’s Festival of the Arts concert, Elwoodstock, NYSCAME, SCMEA, NYSSMA and NAFME. In addition to taking several AP courses, she is also vice president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, treasurer of the music department, and a member of the National Honor Society, World Language Society and yearbook club. “Melissa is extremely organized and extremely musically talented,” Senior Class President Matt McNierney said.
