The Elwood Union Free School District is saddened to learn of the
passing of John Glenn, the first astronaut to orbit the Earth. Our
district’s high school was named after Glenn in November 1962. We
recognize Glenn’s great contributions to the country and are honored to
have a building bearing his name. We hope our students, both present and
future, uphold the values of perseverance, determination and hard work
that Glenn embodied.
During school today, Dec. 9, there are a number of activities taking place to recognize John Glenn. These include:
* A moment of silence observed by all students following the Pledge of Allegiance this morning
* An "In Memorium" message placed on the electronic sign
* Flag flown at Half Staff
* A library display honoring John Glenn and the U.S. Space Program
* Video tribute shown to students in all homeroom classes and in the cafeteria during lunch periods
* Black ribbons on sign and plaque dedication
* Star Wars medley tribute to John Glenn at the winter concert planned for Tuesday
* A vocal tribute to John Glenn for the winter concert, as well.
