Promising Poets

James H. Boyd Intermediate School’s fifth grade class in Room 412 participated in their fifth annual poetry slam on Dec. 16. The students invited family members to attend the event and each recited poems of five stanzas or more from memory.

Since October, the class has been preparing for this event. The goal was to hone public speaking skills and improve their voices, eye-contact, imaginations and memorization ability.

Students picked poems to recite and each brought in a corresponding prop to include on stage with them. The class also created a program for the audience to read along with their poems.

“Many adults have a fear of public speaking,” said fifth-grader Ben Ross. “Since we started early, we will now be able to present further on in life.”
