On June 9, first-grade student Brandon Coolbaugh from Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District was named “Principal for the Day.” Arriving to school in a shirt and tie, Brandon looked the part and approached his duties with the utmost professionalism. Throughout the day, he shadowed Harley Principal Karen Koliadko, helping her with a variety of tasks.
To begin the day, Brandon greeted students on the arriving buses, checked on a custodian fixing a ceiling tile, and even made sure that the cafeteria staff was prepared for the day’s lunch ahead. At lunchtime, Brandon and several of his friends shared lunch with Mrs. Koliadko and spent time discussing life at Harley Avenue.
Brandon had the opportunity to become Principal for the Day thanks to his parents bidding on the opportunity during the Elwood Education Endowment (EEE) dinner, a large fundraiser that supports the EEE. Brandon stated that he hoped his experience for the day will help him prepare for his future career as a high school principal.
