Democracy in Action

Mrs. Gallagher’s second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School learned a valuable lesson about taking action and making change. The students wrote a letter to Delia Neitzel, the school’s director of food services, to let her know that they did not enjoy the pizza that was served in school on Fridays.

Upon receipt of the letter, Ms. Neitzel spoke to the class about their concerns and held a “Pizza Taste-Test Day,” during which students had the opportunity to taste three different pizza recipes and vote on their favorite to be served on Fridays.  Second-grader Colin Presti stated wisely, “You can make change if you just speak up.”
