The Elwood Union Free School District enthusiastically announces Ribu Mathew as the Class of 2012 valedictorian and Julie Hemphill as salutatorian. These two students have worked rigorously to achieve and maintain their academic success, and the district proudly congratulates them.

As an AP Scholar with Honor, a National Merit Commended Student and a member of both the National and Languages Other than English (LOTE) Honor Societies, Mathew boasts an impressive resume that illustrates his ability to balance his activities both in and out of school.

Mathew will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall as a member of the school’s biology program on a pre-medicine track, with dreams of possibly pursuing a career in the field of radiology.

Hemphill has demonstrated an equally impressive ability to balance her academics with a variety of school and community activities. A member of the National Honor Society, Mathletes, Science Olympiad and Knowledge Masters, she also manages to find time for the varsity track and field team as well as the varsity soccer team, of which she is captain.

Endowed with a natural inclination to help others, Hemphill will be studying chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in the fall on a pre-medicine track.
