In an effort to provide parents with the knowledge and tools to academically support their children, the Elwood Union Free School District curriculum department hosted “Elwood Parent University” on May 6, for parents who have children in or entering Elwood Middle School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School.

Led by teacher volunteers and administration, parents took on the role of students and attended two 30-minute sessions. During this time, parents engaged in authentic lessons in STEM education, mathematics, Google Drive programs and asked questions along the way. Focused on the themes of how to keep your child learning throughout the summer and how to help your child as he or she prepares for the middle or high school experience, Parent University offered parents numerous strategies and information on ways to support their children through the academic journey.

“The goal of Parent University is to educate parents about what their children are learning in the classroom so they are better prepared to help their children when they get home,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman.
