DuPont Science Essay Challenge

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Stella Blue Porzungolo received Honorable Mention in the senior division of the DuPont Science Essay Challenge.

Among thousands of entries, Porzungolo was selected as one of 34 winners from across the country and Canada. Porzungolo’s essay, “Using Environmental Sciences and Urbanism to Build a Greener Future,” focused on developing potential solutions for problems related to global warming and the changing climate. According to the DuPont website, the challenge consisted of two primary objectives: to help increase science literacy among students and to motivate students to excel in communicating science, technology, engineering and math concepts.

At the district’s June business meeting, the Board of Education recognized Porzungolo for her success in the essay challenge. Additionally, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern presented Porzungolo with a proclamation from the Town of Huntington. Porzungolo will continue her academic career in the fall at Cooper Union in New York City with a major in architecture.
