Tim Caputo, an Elwood-John H. Glenn High School alumnus, was named the winner of the 2015 TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby Fan’s Choice Award.

Caputo began his baseball career in the seventh grade on the Elwood Middle School team and advanced to the junior varsity team the following year. In ninth grade, he was promoted to the high school’s varsity team, where he excelled as a shortstop. He continued to pursue his athletic talent after graduating high school in 2011, playing shortstop on the Rams baseball team at the University of Rhode Island.

Nominated by the university’s director of social media, Caputo was selected among 17 college athletes as a TD Ameritrade Fan’s Choice Award finalist. Since 2012, the Fan’s Choice Award has aimed to honor college baseball players who are positive role models on and off the field, excel in the classroom and the community, and display leadership qualities that inspire others.

The TD Ameritrade Fan’s Choice Award winner is determined by fans, who vote on a microsite. Following the nomination period, a selection committee determines the finalists who best exemplify the award’s principles. Finalists compete in the fan voting competition, where fans can cast their votes on their Twitter and/or Facebook accounts. As the winner, Caputo received his award during the College Homerun Derby on July 2, which aired on ESPN2.

“It was an honor just to be nominated alongside the 17 other finalists,” said Caputo. “I want to congratulate [them] on what they accomplished over the course of their careers. Each and every one of them is deserving of this award. It's very humbling to be selected as the winner in a group with so much character and talent. It's an honor and a privilege to win this award on behalf of the NCAA, as well as my university.”
