Make-to-Use Mobile Microscopes

Facilitated by an Elwood Education Endowment teacher grant, students in Domenick Abbate’s production systems classes at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School created smartphone microscopes for students to use in Therese Regan’s high school AP Biology class.

Following the approval of the grant, Abbate purchased plywood, Plexiglas, nuts, bolts, magnifying glasses and flashlights for the project. Through the assignment, students learned the dynamics of an assembly line production and made adjustments, as the project progressed, to ensure a quality finished product.

At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, AP Biology students used the smartphone microscopes to perform animal behavior labs with isopods and termites. While using the apparatus, the high schoolers were able to take photos and videos of the organisms.
