For the sixth consecutive year, students and faculty members at Elwood Middle School rallied together for the school’s “Dodge Cancer” fundraiser on Nov. 6, with all proceeds going to help families in the community struggling with cancer.

Coordinated by teachers Darren Szokoli and Patrick Burke, the popular event drew more than 300 student-participants in grades six through eight. A $10 donation was collected from every participant, allowing them and their teammates to take to the courts for several rounds of dodgeball.

Along with parents and friends who came to show their support, student-athletes from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School volunteered to serve as referees in the friendly competition. Through their collective efforts, the school raised approximately $6,000, which will be given to four families in the community that have loved ones battling cancer.

“The Elwood community, students and staff have continued to rally for this event in support of these families,” said Szokoli. “I believe it's not so much the monetary donation we are able to give back to them, but rather that they know there are so many people thinking of them during such a difficult time.”
