Bridge Building Competitors

Over the past several weeks, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students Jimmy Byrne, Brett Lyons and Patrick Rowland worked with technology teachers Domenick Abbate and Charles Rogener during corresponding free periods to construct wood bridges, which they will use to compete in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Bridge Building Contest on March 19.

According to the BNL website, the construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of principles of physics and engineering. It also helps students develop hands-on skills. Through participation, students get a taste of what it is to be an engineer, designing structures to a set of specs and then seeing them perform their function.

As an additional project, the students worked together to create a Knights plaque that now stands in the main lobby of the high school.
