Board Honors Outstanding High School Students

During the Board of Education meeting on Jan. 26, the board recognized seven Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students for their recent achievements. David and Michael Hermanns, Kistofer Kwan, Derek Lee, Katherine McPherson, Justin Yoskowitz and Stephanie Tsangaris were awarded certificates of achievement and praised for their efforts.

This past fall, seniors David and Michael Hermanns were named National Merit Semifinalists based on their impressive high index scores on the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Principal Carisa Burzynski congratulated the two students in front of the Board and community members. The brothers have qualified to compete for more than 7,500 National Merit Scholarships totaling approximately $33 million.

“We thank you for serving as role models for the students of Elwood,” she said. “Congratulations on earning this prestigious recognition.”

Ms. Burzynski also acknowledged seniors Kistofer Kwan, Derek Lee, Katherine McPherson and Justin Yoskowitz for being named National Merit Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students were placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“This is a well-deserved accomplishment,” said Ms. Burzynski. “It is a true testament of your hard work and perseverance.”

In addition, Director of Athletics and Physical Education David Shanahan recognized junior Stephanie Tsangaris for being named a member of the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA) All State Girls Soccer Team for the second year in a row.

“She’s All-County and she’s selected by the New York State Sportswriters which is very difficult to do,” said Mr. Shanahan.

Stephanie was also recently a part of the League 5 Championship Girls Winter Track Team. This was the first time is the school’s history that the team won the championship.

Congratulations to these incredible students on their accomplishments!
