Accomplished Author Shares Insight

The students of James H. Boyd Intermediate School received a special visit from David Adler, author of approximately 232 published books. Some of Mr. Adler’s more familiar titles include those in the “Cam Jansen” and “Bones” mystery series, as well as a collection of picture book biographies.

The accomplished author discussed some of the processes involved in writing and publishing a book and encouraged students to use their own experiences to spur writing ideas.

Students were then given the opportunity to ask Mr. Adler questions. The audience members enjoyed the time they had to share with the creative author.

A Season of Giving

Third-grade students at Boyd Intermediate School worked together to bring the holiday spirit to those in the community who need it most this year, including children in the pediatrics unit of Huntington Hospital.

Students sold raffle tickets and popcorn to their peers in order to raise money to purchase gifts for those in need. They also sold “tickets” to fellow third-graders for a special cafeteria showing of the popular holiday film “The Polar Express.” Those who chose to donate were invited to watch the film while wearing their pajamas and holiday hats.

With the $1,100 raised, class parents purchased gifts that were then wrapped in class by students. The children also designed holiday cards to accompany the gifts, which will be delivered by school social worker Eric Neihardt.

Message/Resources from NYSED Commissioner Dr. John B. King, Jr. about Tragedy in Connecticut

Message/Resources from NYSED Commissioner Dr. John B. King, Jr. about Tragedy in Connecticut
Following the tragic events in Connecticut, I want to share with you resources that may help your school communities cope with the emotions that this event can elicit and help ensure that your school continues to be a safe haven for students to learn and teachers to teach. It is important in the coming days and weeks to listen to your students' concerns and reassure them when they ask questions, and encourage parents to do the same. I trust your judgment and wisdom to lead your staff and students through this difficult time.

While the Newtown, CT tragedy is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no credible information to indicate there is a threat to any school in New York State, you are encouraged to speak to your staff to highlight the need to remain vigilant and cognizant of suspicious individuals, behavior or threats.

In addition, the New York State Police have indicated they are committed to ensuring there is open communication and that appropriate responses can be provided to any school district in need of assistance. If you have any concerns or notice suspicious activity, the State Police encourage you to follow your normal reporting protocols to either your local police agency and/or the New York State Police. Should you require any additional information regarding State Police best practices, please call the New York State Intelligence Center at 518-786-2100.

HARLEY UPDATE ~ November 20th and 21st Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule

November 14, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians of Harley First and Second Graders:

In our district’s effort to recapture some of the lost instructional time following Hurricane Sandy, we have worked collaboratively with the Teachers’ Association and have added a half-day of instruction for Grades 1 and 2 students on November 20, 2012. The information below outlines the schedule for the November 20 and 21 Conference Days.

• Grades 1 and 2 will attend a full day of instruction on Tuesday, November 20, 2012. The half-day schedule for the Wednesday, November 21 will remain the same. The half-day dismissal time will be at 12:20 p.m. Please do not send children to school with lunch as there will be no lunch period scheduled for this day.
• The evening conferences on November 20, 2012 will remain the same.

The teachers have been actively preparing for these conferences, so they may provide you with important information about your child’s progress. We will continue to work together to maximize the children’s instructional time in spite of the challenges Mother Nature has sent our way. Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation.

Enjoy the Thanksgiving break with your families!

Sincerely,

Lynn F. Burke
Interim Principal

A message from the Superintendent

I am taking this opportunity to thank you for your continued patience throughout the past two weeks. I am happy to report that almost all of our students were back in our classrooms today. Despite all of the obstructions on the roads, were able to safely transport our children.
As a result of the storm, each building has some unique needs and I encourage you to review the district or building websites for specific information.

For Harley parents:

Friday, I introduced Lynn Burke, our new interim principal, to our Harley faculty and the executive board of the PTA.There will be a PTA meeting on November 19 for parents to meet Mrs. Burke.Mrs. Mahoney will continue at Harley next week to ease the transition. Three additional phone lines have been secured.

cell:631-459-7707
cell:631-459-7708
land line:631-991-8676

For Boyd parents:

Parent teacher conferences will remain as scheduled on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 13th and the evening of Wednesday, November 14th. In our District’s effort to recapture some of lost instructional time, we have collaborated with the Teacher’s Association and have determined that our students will attend a full day of instruction on Wednesday, November 14th. We appreciate the Boyd faculty’s unanimous agreement to hold a full day of school prior to evening conferences to support our students.

Lastly, one of the chief topics of concern is the loss of instructional time as well as meeting the NYS mandate of 180 school days. No later than the close of work on Tuesday November 13 I will post a memo specifically addressing these issues.

Welcoming New and Familiar Faces to Elwood

The Elwood Union Free School District would like to welcome Dr. Ellen Best-Laimit as its new interim assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Dr. Best-Laimit joins Elwood with more than 38 years of experience in the education field. She most recently served as the superintendent of schools for the Babylon Union Free School District, a position she held from 2006-2011 before retiring. Prior to that, Dr. Best-Laimit served as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Babylon for almost seven years. She has also worked as an elementary school principal in Cold Spring Harbor, assistant principal and coordinator of early childhood centers, among other positions.

Dr. Best-Laimit said, “I am looking forward to joining the Elwood community and getting to know the students, parents and staff. Elwood has a reputation for strong schools and I look forward to lending my knowledge and contributing to its continued advancement.”

The district is also pleased to announce the appointment of Maryann Llewellyn as the interim principal of Harley Avenue Primary School. Mrs. Llewellyn will serve as the principal for the 2012-2013 school year, as Karen Koliadko has accepted a position with a school district on the East End. Mrs. Llewellyn most recently served as Elwood’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She has extensive experience in education, including her work as a classroom teacher, teacher coach, principal, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent and superintendent. Mrs. Llewellyn’s background also includes teaching on the college level at Hofstra University.

Of assuming the principal position at Harley, Mrs. Llewellyn said, “I am excited to return to the primary school level to serve as Harley’s principal and am committed to making the 2012-2013 school year a terrific one for the students.” She also states that she is passionate about literacy and the social and emotional health of all students. “I look forward to building positive relationships with parents and community members,” she said.

In order to employ Dr. Best-Laimit and Mrs. Llewellyn who are both retired, the Elwood Union Free School District is required to secure a waiver from the New York State Education Department. The waivers are currently pending.

Honoring Memories and Achievements: Saying Farewell to the Class of 2012

While the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” and proud family and friends looked on with cameras in hand, the members of the graduating class of 2012 marched in their processional lines into the middle school auditorium to celebrate the district’s 50th Commencement Exercise.

The ceremony began with welcomes and warm wishes for the graduates from High School Principal Dr. Vincent Mulieri and Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo, followed by a message of congratulations from Board of Education President Joseph Fusaro.

Ribu Mathew, the valedictorian of the Class of 2012, and Julie Hemphill, the class salutatorian, addressed the audience. Ribu urged his classmates to “Be happy with what you do. Happiness is about doing something you truly enjoy.” Julie told her peers, “We are prepared with the values of hard work, honesty, and kindness. I wish the very best for every one of you. Congratulations.”

Keynote speaker Jacqueline Maguire then addressed the class. Ms. Maguire, a ’92 graduate of Glenn, joined the FBI as a special agent in 2000 and was the primary case agent who coordinated the investigation into the five terrorists who hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001. Ms. Maguire gave a moving speech about heroes and how the definition of a hero changed after September 11. “Today is the perfect day to honor your personal heroes. Take the time today to acknowledge them,” she said.

Following Ms. Maguire’s speech, members of the graduating class were then invited to the podium, a moment they had waited four years for. As their names were being announced, students crossed the stage, received their diplomas, officially making them high school graduates and alumni of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School.

The 50th Commencement ceremony came to an end in a bittersweet gesture of excitement for their future and the realization that their special time at Glenn had come to an end along with it. Graduates threw their caps in the air and went on to celebrate the moment with friends and family.

A Wild Lesson

The students of Harley Avenue Primary School learned about the life cycle of a butterfly as well as some interesting facts about arachnids and insects during a presentation from the Wildlife Theater group. The group, which is part of the Wildlife Conservation Society that runs five zoos in New York, was invited to present a show that included puppets, songs and dance by the school’s PTA. The presentation imparted valuable information to the students while keeping them fully engaged and entertained.

Welcoming Authors

Thanks to the district’s PTA Council on Arts in Education and Cultural Arts, students of Harley Avenue Primary School and Elwood Middle School had the opportunity meet and listen to the presentations of two well-respected authors.

Josephine Nobisso, author of over 35 children’s books including In English of Course, The Numbers Dance and Mia in the Garden, shared her newest book Hot Cha Cha with Harley Avenue students in grades K-2.

While Harley Avenue explored the rhythm of writing, eighth graders of the Elwood Middle School had the opportunity to hear Ruth Minsky Sender, author of The Cage, describe firsthand her experiences of life in the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Poland and the work camps of Auschwitz.

A Message from Peter Scordo, Superintendent of Schools

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Elwood community for supporting the District’s 2012-2013 budget and for taking the time to vote in this important election. While the process of compiling a budget this year was difficult, by working together, we were able to compile a spending plan that is within the tax cap, yet maintains the core components of what makes an Elwood education so special.

While our budget passed (with over 72% voting in favor!), the work is not over. We must continue to persevere to address the fiscal challenges facing this district as a result of the tax cap. I encourage our entire community to stay involved in the budget process. The work of the Citizens’ Finance/Budget Advisory Committee was very important and particularly helpful for this budget cycle. We look forward to the continued work of this Board subcommittee as we begin the 2013-2014 budget process. I encourage members of the community to either apply for membership in this committee or attend their meetings so that they may better understand the complicated budget development process.

Again, thank you to all of those who participated in this important vote.

Students of Elwood Middle School celebrated Pi Day on March 14, in tribute to the mathematical constant most notably seen with the designation 3.14. In addition to the many delicious "pi's" that were shared, students learned about the importance of pi and how it is used when solving mathematical equations. Teacher Linda Scotto enhanced the lesson by reading Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by Cindy Neuschwander, while students enjoyed the selection of bakery-fresh and homemade treats.

Erik’s Reptile Edventures Visit Boyd

Students of James H. Boyd Intermediate School took part in an interactive learning program that allowed them to “travel” around the world and explore many species of animals. Six years ago, Erik Callendar turned his passion for animals, specifically reptiles, into the educational program experienced by the students of Boyd, known as Erik’s Reptile Edventures.

The self-proclaimed Reptile Edventurer brought with him twelve species of animals, including snakes, tree frogs, lizards, toads, salamanders, turtles, and an American alligator named Walley. Students learned about the animals’ habitats, eating preferences, and means of communication, as well as the adaptations that allow them to survive in the wild.

Students were able to physically connect with animals they have only had the opportunity to read about.

Democracy in Action

Mrs. Gallagher’s second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School learned a valuable lesson about taking action and making change. The students wrote a letter to Delia Neitzel, the school’s director of food services, to let her know that they did not enjoy the pizza that was served in school on Fridays.

Upon receipt of the letter, Ms. Neitzel spoke to the class about their concerns and held a “Pizza Taste-Test Day,” during which students had the opportunity to taste three different pizza recipes and vote on their favorite to be served on Fridays. Second-grader Colin Presti stated wisely, “You can make change if you just speak up.”

December 9, 2011

The Elwood school community is saddened to report that Mary Kate
Szokoli, a beloved member of its teaching staff, passed away earlier
this morning. Mrs. Szokoli was a well-respected first-grade teacher at
Harley Avenue Primary School and an integral part of the Elwood
community. A graduate of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School and a
community resident, Mrs. Szokoli began her teaching career at Harley
nine years ago.

Today, all members of the district’s mental health and guidance team are
on-site at Harley Avenue to meet with students and staff. Ongoing
counseling will also be made available.

The district extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and
students of Mrs. Szokoli. She was a warm, caring, dedicated and highly
regarded member of our Elwood family, and she will be deeply missed.

Students Learn to Be Natural Helpers

Approximately 40 students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School participated in a weekend training session to become Natural Helpers. The Natural Helpers program is based on the premise that students be encouraged to seek help from their peers before going to an adult.

During the weekend, students participated in a suicide prevention workshop conducted by the Sunshine Prevention Center. The session included a presentation from a young adult who had been through the program. In addition, students worked together to develop a sense of trust and community through small group activities and role-playing exercises that served to strengthen active listening and helping skills.

Natural Helpers also deepened their understanding of how to care for one another emotionally, and discussed coping skills and how to express limits when a problem requires professional help. Natural Helpers view themselves as part of a helping team and work to break down the barriers created by groups and cliques within the high school.

District Responds to State Education Department Report

In a report released on November 10 by the New York State Education Department, the Elwood Union Free School District was informed that James H. Boyd Intermediate School was identified as a “School in Need of Improvement.” This designation was based on the special education subgroup not achieving adequate yearly progress, as determined by the new state scoring system.

It is important to note that the District, as a whole, was reported as being in “Good Standing.” As always, the Elwood Board of Education and administration remain committed to improving academic achievement among all subgroups of our student population. We will continue to work together to ensure that our students are provided with the programs and services needed to meet not only state benchmarks, but the high standards set forth by the Elwood community.

Students Do A Good Deed At Boyd

Students from Mr. Lauro's fifth-grade class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School demonstrated terrific character by cleaning up the Boyd reading garden. The children pulled weeds that grew over the summer in order to make it usable for their peers. "It's one thing to teach character education by reading a text,” said Mr. Lauro, “but the children really grasp the concept better by doing something positive for their community." The garden looks terrific and is ready for use!

The Middle School Library Goes Wireless!

With the introduction of 30 wireless netbook computers, students in the middle school now have a technology-enabled library. The space was previously outfitted with a large screen display for presentations, and a cluster of five computers for research. With the introduction of the netbooks, there are now enough computers available for every student in the whole class. Resources such as World Book Online encyclopedia, Discovery Channel video on demand, and the Internet can be accessed from anywhere in the library on the netbooks. Electronic research techniques will be introduced to students, now that the research tools are in their hands.

MS Threat is Not Credible

At approximately noon today, staff members discovered a written bomb threat scrawled on a bathroom wall at the Elwood Middle School. The building was immediately evacuated and searched and a ConnectEd message was sent out to parents. Later that afternoon, Suffolk County Police also visited the Middle School and examined the message.

There was no credible evidence for the threat. As a precaution, additional searches will be conducted in the overnight and tomorrow morning.

While these events have become all-too-commonplace in our society, it is of the utmost importance that we take these threats seriously, as the health and safety of our students and staff is our first priority.

In sum, the district acted literally within minutes to empty the middle school and conduct a sweep to ensure the safety of students and staff, as is our established practice. Finding that this was not a credible threat and merely a distracting prank, we re-established our presence in the building. We regret not contacting police to alert them to this issue, and extend our apologies to any of our community members who became needlessly concerned as a result.

Boyd Will Be Just “Fine” This Year!

As former principal Sharon McCabe steps into her new role of retiree, James H. Boyd Intermediate School welcomes, with open arms, the newest member of the Elwood Union Free School District family, Principal Pamela Fine. Ms. Fine joins the district with 18 years of educational experience, including, most recently, seven years as principal of the John Lewis Childs School in Floral Park. Prior to this role, Ms. Fine spent 11 years in District 22 of the New York City Public Schools, where she held the positions of classroom teacher, literacy staff developer and assistant principal.

Ms. Fine earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education, which she obtained from Iona College and the College of Staten Island, respectively. She also holds an Advanced Certificate in Administration and Supervision from Brooklyn College.

“I’m excited to be joining the Elwood School District and the James H. Boyd Intermediate School,” stated Ms. Fine. “From what I have learned so far, the faculty, staff, families and community have a vested interest in providing the children of Elwood with an outstanding instructional experience. I am looking forward to contributing to those efforts.”

No Merger in Sight for Elwood

Board of Education Update: Further actions regarding merger were stalled after the initial information meeting. The Elwood School District is not in discussion to merge or consolidate.

In the quagmire of deteriorating support from Albany, limited control over escalating expenses, and controversial tax cap legislation, the Board of Education took the initiative to explore potential financial and educational benefits of merging with a neighboring school district of our choice.

Phase 1 of the Board’s initiative took place on January 6, 2011 at a public meeting where three experts on the subject of merger were invited to speak, as well as all interested stakeholders in our community, and the leadership of neighboring school districts. The goal of Phase 1 was to obtain general information on consolidation protocol and additional financial support – if any, and pertinent laws and regulations. Phase 2 of the exploration could only move forward if a contiguous district expressed interest in conducting a merger feasibility study.

Having learned that the financial gains in the multi-year processare mostly derived from grants and additional consolidation aid from Albany, which at best is suspect, no neighboring district has expressed interest to proceed with a study. It has also become evident that while the financial outlook poses an incredible challenge to competitive education, many residents and Board members recognize the exceptional goodwill value associated with Elwood School District’s reputation and the deep-rooted cultural bond our schools have with the overall Elwood community. Therefore, no merger is in sight for Elwood.

Lastly, the Board of Education wants to make it emphatically clear to all that Elwood is dedicated to great education - academically, artistically, and athletically, and the sanctity of this commitment will remain intact over the near-term and in the future.

STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESENTED AT THE REORGANIZATION MEETING JULY 5TH, 2011

Dear Community Members,
The Board of Education is very happy that the budget passed, and we thank you all for the support.

We, personally, and as a Board, want to thank those members of our staff who responded to the Board of Education’s request to follow the lead of our Superintendent and Central Office Administrators to cut increases or freeze compensation in the upcoming year - a sincere thank you to all.

The Board of Education put forward this budget, although we did so with great concern. The Board recognizes that 7.98% increases are not sustainable.

Unfortunately, as many of you know, local boards of education do not have much say in the majority of their budget expenditures. Laws that foster entitlements, Last In First Out legislation over merit, one-sided bargaining rules, and the growth of state legislated mandated expenses, in combination with the reduction of state aid, are crippling our ability to provide the full breadth of education that all children deserve. This is something that must change. We will not and cannot wait until December or January to see the cards we have been dealt by Albany and hope that we can deliver a reasonably low percentage [tax levy] increase next year.
We need to pressure Albany and our local legislators that represent us in Albany now to legislate structural changes that will improve education, not diminish it, while helping us lower expenses and find revenues from sources outside of the tax base. We must rise up as a community and demand progressive thinking and action in NY State that is long overdue. Moreover, we must keep that pressure applied until we accomplish our goals.

Please join us in letting our local representatives from Albany know how we feel. We are in the process of organizing an interested group that will work parallel to official BOE efforts for those who wish to make the voice of Elwood heard. This organization will be formed and operated outside of our Board of Education umbrella, although Board members, as well as former Board members, will be engaged as personal volunteers in this movement.

Nikki Crowley and Melissa Maher will be gathering names, phone numbers, and email addresses after the meeting from anyone who would like to join this organized effort.

In May 2011, a proud Elwood community stood up and displayed a tremendous commitment to the education of children with a generosity that defines our character. Simply put, we took care of our children; however, we did not take care of our problems. The Board of Education, together with the support of our community, is willing and ready to fight the fight against those who threaten our mission; that is our children’s opportunity to have a competitive, well-rounded education.

We must take action and tell Albany how we feel and more importantly, tell them what we need. We will not stand by… We do not want to raise taxes while diminishing education. Please join the effort.

Thank you,
Joseph Fusaro, President
Members of Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education

New Math Program Adopted for K-5 Students

At its July 5, 2011 meeting, the Board of Education adopted a new math program for students in kindergarten through grade 5 called Envision. Over the course of 2010-11 school year, a committee comprised of grade K-5 teachers researched a variety of new math programs. The group chose Envision for several reasons: 1) The program aligns with the New York State common core standards; 2) It offers children the opportunity to reason both abstractly and quantitatively; and 3) The program has a digital and electronic structure, meaning that parents will be able to access Envision from home to assist their children with homework and lesson review. In addition, Envision conforms to a variety of ability levels, from those students who are in need of additional academic intervention, to those who perform above grade level.

Envision contains six domains including counting and numberness; numbers and operations; operations and algebraic thinking; geometry; measurement and data; and concepts and problem solving. Overall, it is a highly-focused, research-based, and manageable program.

Teachers will be trained at the beginning of the school year in Envision and will receive additional training throughout the year as new domains are introduced.

The program will begin for students in September.

In the fall, the District committee will conduct a full presentation about Envision to the community during a Board of Education meeting. In the meantime, if residents have any questions or require additional information about the program, they may contact Maryann Llewellyn, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, at 266-5400 x286. You may also view a YouTube presentation on Envision by clicking here.

Kindergarten Update

As many community members are aware, the 2011-12 budget approved by voters in mid-May calls for a reduction in the district’s kindergarten program from the current full-day program to a half-day session.
An innovative and cost-effective solution was sought by the Board of Education that would minimize this partial loss of program by moving forward with a supplemental half-day “Kinder-skills” session that utilized teaching assistants instead of teachers. The teaching assistants would appropriately be supervised by a teacher as well as building and central administration.
Unfortunately, this program met opposition from the Elwood Teachers’ Alliance, and after extensive investigation and consultation with legal counsel, we have been advised that this option is not possible because it would be formally challenged as an improper work practice under the existing collective bargaining agreement (you can read the attorney memo here). Furthermore, based on precedent, it is likely that defending this challenge would be costly and, ultimately, unsuccessful.
We are disappointed by the loss of our full-day kindergarten program, but acknowledge that difficult choices must be made under the financial circumstances that exist. We will continue to explore creative ways of implementing important programs for our students and hope that the entire school community will embrace new endeavors in the future.

Creating Lasting Memories: Class of 2011 Bids Farewell

Parents, siblings, extended family, friends and peers gathered at the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School football field on June 24 to honor the Class of 2011 at the District’s 49th Commencement Exercise. Graduates proudly processed in to “Pomp and Circumstance” performed by the high school band. Due to impending rain, the ceremony was shortened; however the evening still served as a special way to conclude a remarkable four years at John Glenn for the Class of 2011.

To begin the ceremony, Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo welcomed all in attendance and offered his congratulations to the graduates, followed by special words of encouragement by Board of Education President Michael Kaszubski. Then, members of the graduating class were called to the podium. One by one, graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, officially becoming alumni of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. Honorary diplomas were also given to retiring Board members Mr. Kaszubski and Patricia Matos for their service to the Elwood community, as well as retiring James H. Boyd Intermediate School Principal Sharon McCabe.

Following the presentation of the diplomas, the two co-valedictorians of the Class of 2011 addressed the audience. In her speech, Melissa Groark said, “To the graduates of the Class of 2011, I know we will all move on to do great things…We should not be afraid of change or worry about the future, for it is us who will help shape it.” Michael Gross then offered his capstone speech to his fellow graduates and stated, “Here, students do not just attend high school, they are a part of it….Something that has always struck me as special is the unity of our class. I’ve been moved by the sense of community this class possesses.”

To conclude the ceremony, graduates celebrated by throwing their caps in the air. For many, the festivities continued into the evening at gatherings with family and friends.

Students in Mrs. Masserwick's and Mrs. Trucios's English 8 classes at Elwood Middle School closed out the fourth quarter with their study of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Part of the learning experience was enacting scenes from the play in costumes and with props that were part of an Elwood Education Endowment grant several years ago. As the students came to realize, drama is fun for both the performers and the audience.

Fairy Tales Come to Life at Harley Avenue

Throughout the school year, students in Ms. Colmone’s first-grade class at Harley Avenue Primary School have engaged in a series of writer’s workshops. For their final project, students studied fairy tales and were asked to write their own inventive story. As a celebration of this final unit, students invited their parents to attend a special writer’s celebration, during which they read portions of their creative stories.

Fairy tales ranged from “Three Little Rats and the Big Vacuum” to “Two Little Dragons and One Big Knight.” The students read their tales with enthusiasm, drawing smiles and laughter from the crowd. At the conclusion of all presentations, Ms. Colmone’s class acted out the famous fairy tale “The Three Little Pigs.”

Boyd Students Celebrate End of School Year

In early June, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated the end of the school year with a special field day. Students were divided into teams of blue and white (the district’s colors) and participated in a variety of fun, athletic events. Throughout the day, students took part in contests such as tug o’ war, a chicken relay, and a water relay. As team members participated in the events, their fellow students, along with teachers and parents, cheered them on from the sidelines.

Class of 2011 Celebrates the End of Year

In late June, seniors from the Class of 2011 at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School celebrated the end of their academic career in the school district by hosting Senior Day. Similar in style to the field day students participated in during their days at James H. Boyd Intermediate School, seniors were divided into teams and took part in a series of events throughout the day, including a Powder Puff football game, water balloon toss, and tug o’ war.

The field day began last year with the Class of 2010 and will likely become a school tradition at Glenn, thanks to the many parent volunteers who came in to make the day a reality.

Harley First Grader Named “Principal for the Day”

On June 9, first-grade student Brandon Coolbaugh from Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District was named “Principal for the Day.” Arriving to school in a shirt and tie, Brandon looked the part and approached his duties with the utmost professionalism. Throughout the day, he shadowed Harley Principal Karen Koliadko, helping her with a variety of tasks.

To begin the day, Brandon greeted students on the arriving buses, checked on a custodian fixing a ceiling tile, and even made sure that the cafeteria staff was prepared for the day’s lunch ahead. At lunchtime, Brandon and several of his friends shared lunch with Mrs. Koliadko and spent time discussing life at Harley Avenue.

Brandon had the opportunity to become Principal for the Day thanks to his parents bidding on the opportunity during the Elwood Education Endowment (EEE) dinner, a large fundraiser that supports the EEE. Brandon stated that he hoped his experience for the day will help him prepare for his future career as a high school principal.

JGHS Teacher Wins Technology Integration Award

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School teacher Mr. Garret Chesnoff won a Technology Integration Award from Western Suffolk BOCES for a blogging project he conducted this year with his journalism class. This course is designed to expose students to both print and broadcast journalism. Over the course of a semester, students learn to write news stories, editorials, interviews, and feature stories. The blogging project added a new dimension to the curriculum this year. Students were challenged with producing articles that were ready to be reviewed not only by their teacher, but by their peers and the rest of the world. Posting articles on a blog provided students with a realistic journalism experience.

For Mr. Chesnoff’s recognition by Western Suffolk BOCES, he has been awarded $1,000 for use in his classroom. Congratulations!

JGHS Student Chosen for Prestigious “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Scholarship”

Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Melissa Groark, who was chosen as a winner of the “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year” scholarship. Melissa was chosen from a highly selective pool of more than 40,000 applicants, based on a myriad of factors, including her excellent academic and sporting record, her ability to serve as a leader, and her significant contribution to the community within the past year.

Melissa, not only an outstanding student, has been a four-year starter on the Girls Varsity Soccer team, as well as a three-year captain. She is a four-time All-County and All-Conference honoree, as well. Melissa plans on attending Cornell University, where she will play on the women’s soccer team. The scholarship will provide her with $7,500 to be used toward her college career.

In addition to the scholarship, Melissa now has the opportunity to give back to the community by donating $5,000 to the Ronald McDonald House charity through the support of the Elwood community. The District encourages all community members to vote for Melissa’s charity by visiting the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Scholarship (SAMMY) website at www.sammymvp.com, and voting for Melissa. The community can vote for her daily through June 17. The SAMMY student athlete who receives the most votes will earn the $5,000 for their charity. Please vote for Melissa and vote often!

Paraprofessional Staff Agrees to New Contract with Capped Increases

The Elwood Paraprofessional Union and the Elwood Board of Education have agreed upon the terms for a new contract that will freeze salaries and steps for the next year.

This three-year agreement, coming just a week after the Elwood custodial unit agreed to significant contract concessions, adds another 50 Elwood employees to the staff who are doing their part to help the district’s children and residents.

Most paraprofessionals in Elwood are community residents who generally work part-time, supporting our programs for students by assisting staff, working in the cafeterias, and helping students with special needs.

The new agreement calls for a complete freeze with neither overall nor step increases for the 2011-12 school year. The initial year is followed by two additional contractual years that will not increase salaries and longevity above 2% in each year and may be lower, depending upon implementation of a state tax cap, and it freezes step increases in both additional years as well. It should also be noted that this agreement represents the entirety of the increase in compensation.

The Board thanks our paraprofessionals for joining our custodians, central administrators and Superintendent of Schools in their concessions aimed to preserve the programs, services, and staffing on behalf of the Elwood community.

Budget Preserves High-Value Elwood Education

Essential Programs and Services Maintained if Budget Approved

On Tuesday, May 17, the Elwood community will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed budget for the 2011-12 school year. Tied to this vote are many other opportunities for our school district: an opportunity to preserve the high-quality education that has allowed Elwood students to succeed and realize great accomplishments over the years; an opportunity for our district to continue to offer a variety of programs and services that support students in becoming well-rounded, cultured citizens; and an opportunity for the Elwood community to remain a desirable place to live and learn.

The District’s proposal continues to provide the necessary breadth of opportunities for our children to learn, grow, and prepare for college and a 21st Century workforce. The proposed budget preserves the core educational programs and services our current students receive, all athletics, the music performing arts program, and most other extracurricular activities. The spending plan represents a budget increase of 5.56%, which equates to a tax levy increase of 7.98%.

The Board of Education is aware that the tax levy increase is large, as compared to surrounding districts. Unfortunately, it is districts such as ours - districts that have “played by the rules” - that are being challenged in this manner. Many other school systems across Long Island are drawing upon their reserve accounts (much like a homeowner’s savings account) to lessen the tax levy impact. Unlike these other districts, however, our district has carefully budgeted over the years to avoid “overtaxing” the community and artificially building up the reserves. By budgeting carefully, we have maintained a low per pupil expenditure, meaning the district operates very efficiently. For this reason, when our District is faced with a multitude of financial challenges that we have no control over, as discussed below, we have two options: either to dismantle the foundation of an Elwood education or to give the community an opportunity to preserve the core of our program. Of course, the latter is what our Board of Education has voted to do.

Why is this year so challenging? The New York State budget calls for a drastic reduction in state aid to districts across the state. For Elwood, this means a loss of $527,000 with an additional reduction of $290,000 in Federal Stimulus Funds. For a district of our size, this loss of revenue is devastating.

While Elwood continues to see declining support from the state, the state continues to increase the number of unfunded mandates, including a mandatory increase of approximately $784,000 in pension costs for 2011-12.

Community Input is Helpful
When the District began the budget process several months ago, the Board asked the community to voice their opinion on what they valued and would support in a proposed budget. Last year, the Board of Education proposed a budget that made reductions but kept the majority of programs and services intact to preserve the high value of an Elwood education. Given the defeat of the budget on the first public vote, this year the Board began the process by evaluating a core budget – meaning one that was at contingency level for 2011-12, with an expenditure increase of only 1.92%. The picture a contingency budget paints for our District is devastating – it calls for the elimination of 33 teaching/staff positions, all athletics, and the music performing arts program, to name just a few. Even with these drastic reductions, the tax levy would still increase by 5.65%.

The Board was pleased with the amount of public participation throughout the budget process and appreciates the feedback from the hundreds of parents, students, alumni, and community residents who took the time to voice their opinions on what should be preserved through the proposed budget. Based on this input, the Board restored some programs and services that would have otherwise been cut. For a complete list of what has been preserved through the budget, as well as a list of reductions, please see page 2.
For more information on the proposed budget, including copies of budget documents presented at the Board workshops, visit the District’s website at www.elwood.k12.ny.us. Most importantly, please take advantage of the opportunity to vote on the proposed budget on May 17.

Custodial and Maintenance Staff Pitches In, Agrees to Contract Concession

The Board of Education of the Elwood UFSD is pleased to announce that the district’s custodial and maintenance employees, represented by the United Public Service Employees Union, have agreed to a contractual concession that will reduce their increase in pay by half next year.
The Board thanks these hardworking men and women - a number of whom are residents of the district - for pitching in to help the district, given our extraordinarily difficult financial circumstances. We believe we must do all we can to preserve the programs and staffing that our community wants for Elwood’s students.
For the 2011-12 school year, the custodial and maintenance staff will receive an increase of 1.625%, followed by two additional contractual years that will not increase salaries above 2% in each year and may be lower, depending upon implementation of a state tax cap. It will save the district money in 2011-12, and solidifies a fair and reasonable labor agreement for the subsequent two years that is tied to evolving economic conditions.
It should also be noted that this agreement represents the entirety of the increase in compensation.

Harley Avenue Teachers Model Learning Literacy Classrooms

At Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District, select teachers have been working in conjunction with Harley Principal Karen Koliadko and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maryann Llewellyn to establish model Learning Literacy Classrooms for the school. Each grade within Harley currently has one model classroom.

Within the Learning Literacy Classrooms, teachers have developed a series of work stations for small group instruction work with their students. Children in these classes rotate between the stations, at which they work together in small groups on various literacy-based activities and receive extra support from the teacher. Stations include such hands-on activities as buddy reading; a drama station where students “act out” popular literary works using puppets; a computer station at which children conduct literacy-based activities on the computer; and a word station, where children use magnetic alphabet letters to form words on cookie trays.

According to Mrs. Koliadko, “The students rotate throughout the stations and one of their rotations may be with the teacher to work in small groups to target areas of need. The goal is for the teachers to work in small groups based on the children’s needs, whether they are in need of academic assistance or extra enrichment.”

The Learning Literacy Classrooms were formed in January 2011; however excitement about the model stations has already spread throughout the school. “The teachers are becoming more comfortable with the stations and are excited about expanding into other classrooms,” said Mrs. Koliadko. In the future, the school plans on inviting fellow teachers into the Learning Literacy Classrooms to visit and learn from the classroom set-up.

Harley Read-a-Thon Benefits Cancer Research

On March 4, the school community of Harley Avenue Primary School united for the second annual Read-a-Thon, held after school hours. The event, completely organized and run by Harley staff volunteers, raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help in the fight against pediatric cancer.

During the Read-a-Thon, Harley staff members were stationed at centers throughout the school to read to children. Students rotated to three different areas, where they could hear their favorite stories for one hour. They also had an opportunity to enter a raffle, through which they could win a stack of books hand selected by the teachers of Harley Avenue.

To attend the Read-a-Thon, families were asked to donate five dollars. In addition, the school raised money through a “wear red” day, where faculty and students were invited to wear red for a donation of only a dollar. Teachers and other staff members also greatly contributed to the cause by paying $20 for the privilege of wearing jeans to school one day.

In total, the Harley Avenue community raised $1,896 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Thank you to all who participated and donated to this worthy cause.

National Junior Honor Society Heads to Albany

The Elwood Middle School's National Junior Honor Society, along with advisor Diane Locascio and teachers Wendy Braxton, Jim Morris and Brian Bissenger, took a trip up to Albany to visit the New York State Capitol on March 2, 2011. The students took a tour of the capitol building and met with several elected officials. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, Senator Carl Marcellino and Assemblyman Andrew Raia met with the students. The honor society was provided with an opportunity to ask questions regarding important issues such as budget concerns and consolidation. The National Junior Honor Society also attended the Senate and Assembly sessions where they were recognized by Senator Marcellino and Assmblyman Raia. This was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience democracy in action. There will be a presentation of the trip at the Board of Education meeting in April.

Glenn Students “Feud” with Peers in Oregon

On February 15, students enrolled in Sheri Davis’s Level 4 Spanish classes at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School put their language skills to the test as they played a game of ¿Qué Dice la Gente? against students at Ashland High School in Ashland, Oregon. Translated to "What do the people say?” the game is similar in fashion to “Family Feud.”

During the game, the Glenn students could see their peers in Ashland via videoconference, and vice versa. Throughout the friendly game the peers battled against one other to communicate and answer questions – speaking only in Spanish, of course.

The game of ¿Qué Dice la Gente? was one of many interactive projects the Glenn students have participated in during the year with the Ashland students, but the first “live” meeting between the two groups. Prior activities included writing messages and speaking to one another. The students had not seen each other prior to the videoconference, however, as the teachers wanted to promote interaction that was devoid of judgments based on appearances.

According to Ms. Davis, “We are planning more activities in the future, each using a different technological tool based on the learning.”

Champion Knights Visit Boyd Third Graders

After the John Glenn Knights concluded their 12-0 season by capturing the Long Island Championship, third-grade students in Mrs. Zatulskis’ class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School wrote cards of congratulations to the team, coaches and staff. Coach Shanahan and the team appreciated the letters so much that they wanted to visit the students personally to say thank you. In late January, Coach Shanahan, joined by members of the football team, visited the Boyd students. The third graders greeted the team with posters, letters, and pictures to welcome the championship team to their school.

During the visit, the football players read a book to the class, talked about the importance of teamwork, and answered questions from the third graders. Both the Boyd students and Knights players enjoyed the visit. The team members present were: Bryan Shankman #54, Tommy Forsberg #1, Ryan Rielly #3, Nick Wagner #2, Rich Czeczotka #7, and Coach Shanahan.

Developing a Love of Reading

For the 22nd year, volunteers from BAE Systems in Greenlawn are volunteering their time to enrich the lives of first-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School. Each week, ten BAE Systems volunteers meet with their selected students and read with them for 30 minutes.

During their time together, the volunteers and students take turns reading and engaging in reading-related activities. The program helps build a child’s confidence in reading out loud, in addition to serving as a way for students to spend time reading outside the classroom setting.

According to Deb Bingham, a BAE Systems volunteer, “Our company is very involved with community service, and this is a way for me to get involved in my community, as well.”

Boyd Students Celebrate Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On January 14, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students gathered in the auditorium where they first viewed a short video presentation featuring excerpts of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Fifth graders from Mr. Kelly’s class then gave a brief overview of Dr. King’s life, including the challenges he faced to overcome inequality.

Students from Miss Gates’ fifth-grade class also participated by each sharing a small portion of Dr. King’s speech, which was one of the defining moments of the American Civil Rights Movement when first delivered by Dr. King on August 28, 1963. Boyd’s celebration concluded with select third, fourth, and fifth-grade students leading the crowd in singing “Martin Luther King” and “We Shall Overcome.”

Notes from the 1/6 Public Meeting to Explore Possible Consolidation

January 6, 2011 - Presentation by New York State Merger Consultant (PDF) NEW!
January 6, 2011 - Reorganization Incentive Aid (PDF) NEW!
January 6, 2011 - Remarks by Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo (PDF) NEW!
January 6, 2011 - Planning for the Future through School District Reorganization (PDF) NEW!
December 2, 2010 - Projected 2011-12 Budget Information (PDF) NEW!

Previous Information on Exploring Consolidation
Facing continued financial challenges, Elwood leaders will discuss exploring consolidation at the Board of Ed workshop on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. (The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. It is expected that the Board of Education will immediately vote to enter executive session to discuss personnel and legal matters for approximately 90 minutes and then resume the public portion of the meeting at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Panelists will begin the presentations and discussions at 7:30 pm.) in the Middle School auditorium.

As the community is aware, the Elwood School District, among others, continues to be faced with the difficult challenge of providing a cost-effective, high-quality education program in a time of ongoing economic strain.

For the current school year, we were forced to eliminate 14 teaching/staff positions and to reduce certain programs for students in order to offer a budget that was acceptable to the community. Looking ahead to the 2011-12 school year, financial conditions remain difficult. Funding that all school districts have been receiving through the Federal Stimulus Program is set to expire. In addition, we are faced with continued reductions in total assessed value, and there is a strong possibility that a proposed tax cap will be enacted. These factors, coupled with rising retirement system contributions , health care costs, as well as other obligations that the district must pay by law, paint an ominous portrait of the future.

With the above considerations in mind, the Elwood Board of Education had preliminary discussions at its December 2nd workshop regarding the feasibility and relative benefits of consolidating the district with one or more neighboring school districts. As a result, the Board decided to send letters to the Boards of Education and Superintendents of our contiguous districts (Northport-East Northport, Harborfields, Commack, South Huntington, and Half Hollow Hills) to ascertain interest in holding joint meetings to explore the issues surrounding possible consolidation. We await the replies of these districts.

The Board will host a special Consolidation Workshop for the public on Thursday, January 6th in the Elwood Middle School Auditorium. We will have a panel discussion with experts who have worked on the consolidation process in the past and who can offer members of the public an understanding of the ‘how’ and ‘why’ associated with the effort. More information on this workshop will be forthcoming.

We do not take this matter lightly; we are proud of our school/community identity and realize this is a very serious issue that will require enormous research, community input, and evaluation. However, the Board of Education feels we must exhaust all efforts in looking for ways to continue offering our students an excellent education while providing an affordable tax rate for residents. Unfortunately, we are at a place where further cuts like those we experienced in the current school year may seriously damage the quality of our district.

Your thoughts and comments will be most helpful in defining the future of our schools, and we look forward to your participation at our January 6th workshop. Please know that we care very deeply for our schools and community, and this is an honest effort to simply explore all possible alternatives.

High School Science Stars Recognized

Two exceptional students at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School have been recognized for their accomplishments in the field of science, under the guidance of science research teacher Diana Soehl.

Student Daniela Plunkett was recently recognized by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for her accepted science proposal to be completed using the National Synchrotron Light Source, a national user research facility. Daniela’s research project will explore how biofilms from bacteria, algae, and fungi might be used to clean up toxic levels of copper in fresh water. To conduct her experiments, Daniela will be able to use BNL’s micrometer-sized x-ray beams. According to BNL, Daniela’s project was chosen for inclusion by an “international review panel consisting of scientists and educational program coordinators by other synchrotron facilities.”

In addition to Daniela’s accomplishment, fellow student Lauren Fried has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in June 2011. During the 10-day program, Lauren will engage on hands-on curriculum projects that explore the medical field, including clinical and research visits. She will learn about the variety of medical specialties, what it is like to work in the field, and learn firsthand from the area’s top medical professionals.

Congratulations to both Daniela and Lauren for their outstanding accomplishments!

Celebrating Cultural Differences

Second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School recently participated in a cultural celebration to recognize their heritage. Students were required to research their background and create projects based on their findings. While some students interviewed family members, others created family trees to show their fellow students.

On the days of the celebrations, students arrived at school dressed in T-shirts that pictured their flags of heritage. Harley parents also donated their time by cooking food from around the world to share with the students. From matzah balls and goulash, to shepherd’s pie and beef empanadas, the second-grade students were exposed to foods that celebrate a variety of cultures.

According to second-grade teacher Chris Washouski, “The kids worked very hard on their projects and we are very proud of them.”

Students Honor Shakespeare; Share Own Creative Poems

Sixth-grade students in Ms. Nicole Litterello’s class at Elwood Middle School recently completed a five-day unit of study on William Shakespeare and his famous poem, “Song of the Witches.” As part of their lesson, students read a biography of William Shakespeare, discussed the vocabulary used in “Song of the Witches,” and watched a scene from Macbeth which shows the witches reciting the poem.

To culminate their study, Ms. Litterello’s students created their own poems, inspired by Shakespeare’s piece. They then published their literary works and invited parents and district administrators to attend a choral reading. During the reading, students recited their creative poems for all in attendance.

According to Ms. Litterello, “The choral reading was a great way for the students to practice reading fluently and to show them that the hard work they did is meaningful. It was a positive, rewarding experience for all.”

Statement on Boyd Fire from Superintendent of Schools

On Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:35 p.m., a fire broke out at the James H. Boyd Intermediate School. The building sustained exterior roof damage and minor interior damage. No one was in the building at the time of the fire. There were no reported injuries.

Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff. The district immediately contacted our insurance company and the building was quickly inspected, cleaned up, and deemed safe for school to be in session on Monday without any delay.

The Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Huntington Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire and the district is fully cooperating with their investigation. At this time, fire officials are calling this incident suspicious.

We are very appreciative of the outstanding efforts of the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad and the Huntington Fire Marshal who quickly responded to this fire. We would also like to thank our lacrosse coach, who was conducting practice nearby, for calling in the fire to officials.

In addition, the district would like to also thank Bill Pastore, Rich Rouse, John Piersa, Dave DeSimone, Rich Milliken, Donald Rohrssen, Russell Tillman and Tom Umland for their hard work and dedication to the district for allowing us to open today.

If anyone has any information regarding this fire, please contact the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad at 631.852.6165.

Common Individual Student Report/Parent Report Questions and Answers

Common Individual Student Report/Parent Report Questions and Answers from New York State

Common Individual Student Report/Parent Report Questions and Answers

What is an ISR? ( Individual Student Report )

It is a report that provides information about a student’s results on the English language arts or mathematics assessments, such as the Scale Score and Performance Level for the current year and prior years, if applicable; Academic Intervention Services, if applicable; and SPI results (see below).

We lost our Individual Student Reports. How can I get another copy?

Due to student confidentiality, the New York State Education Department does not release any individual student data. If you are a parent, please contact your school for a copy of your child’s report.

How to obtain school results:

How can I see how my school/district did on the 2010 ELA and Math data compared to other schools?

All public and charter school data are posted on the Department’s website at:
http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/irts/pressRelease/20100728/home.html

How can I see nonpublic school data?

Send call to Gloria Salavatore 518-474-7965 or send the request to Dataquest@mail.nysed.gov

Questions about different sections on the ISR:

What is an SPI? (Standard Performance Index)

The SPI estimates the number of questions a child would have answered correctly if there were 100 items per standard. The child’s performance on each standard is compared with the SPI target range. A student scoring within the target range demonstrates the expected understanding of the standard. The target ranges vary across standards because some standards may contain more difficult items than others.

What is the official score - the SPI or the scale score and performance level?

The scale score and performance level are better indicators of the child’s performance on the New York State Learning Standards than SPIs. Therefore, the official score is the scale score and performance level.

Why do the SPIs on the back of an ISR all say “above the target” but the Scale Score on the front of the document says Level 3 (or Level 2 or
Level 1)?

It is possible to have all SPIs "above the target" yet still have the mean Scale Score at or below level 3; the SPI is not simply the percent of correct items on a given standard. Additional information is considered when computing SPIs. In technical terms, the procedure used to calculate the SPI is based on a combination of Item Response Theory (IRT) and Bayesian methodology. In non-technical terms, when calculating the SPI, the procedure looks at:
1. the number of items related to the objective that the student answered correctly;
2. the difficulty level of those items;
3. the student's performance on the rest of the items related to that objective. This method increases the accuracy of the SPI.

What is considered passing?

The Department now uses the terms “meeting the proficiency standards.” Performance Levels 3 and 4 are considered meeting the proficiency standard. For 2009-2010, the State Education Department has raised the bar for the Basic and Proficient performance levels. A child scoring at or above the new Basic standard (Level 2) is on track to pass the English or math Regents exam required for high school graduation. A child scoring at or above the new Proficiency standard (Level 3) is on track to earn a college-ready score on the English or math Regents Examination.

What are the different performance levels and what do they mean?

ELA

1. Level 1: Below Standard
• Student performance does not demonstrate an understanding of the English language arts knowledge and skills expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child did not demonstrate the knowledge and skills required by the ELA Learning Standards. Therefore, the school is required to provide academic intervention services for your child. Discuss the school's plan for these services with your child's teacher or school officials.

2. Level 2: Meets Basic Standard
• Student performance demonstrates a partial understanding of the English language arts knowledge and skills expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child partially demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the ELA Learning Standards. For the 2010-11 school year only, the regulations for required extra help, or Academic Intervention Services (AIS), have been adjusted. The cut score for AIS will be identical to the 2009 score that required students to receive AIS (650). If your child scored below 650, the school is required to provide academic intervention services for your child. If your child scored a Level 2 but above the 650 score, please check with your child’s school for its AIS policy. For students scoring close to Level 3, monitoring your child's performance may be sufficient. Please discuss the school’s plan for these services with your child’s teacher or school officials.

3. Level 3: Meets Proficiency Standard
• Student performance demonstrates an understanding of the English language arts knowledge and skills expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the ELA Learning Standards.

4. Level 4: Exceeds Proficiency Standard
• Student performance demonstrates a thorough understanding of the English language arts knowledge and skills expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the ELA Learning Standards.

Math

1. Level 1: Below Standard
• Student performance does not demonstrate an understanding of the mathematics content expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child did not demonstrate the knowledge and skills required by the Mathematics Learning Standard. Therefore, the school is required to provide academic intervention services for your child. Discuss the school's plan for these services with your child's teacher or school officials.

2. Level 2: Meets Basic Standard
• Student performance demonstrates a partial understanding of the mathematics content expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child partially demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the Mathematics Learning Standard.

• Student performance demonstrates an understanding of the mathematics content expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the Mathematics Learning Standard.

4. Level 4: Exceeds Proficiency Standard
• Student performance demonstrates a thorough understanding of the mathematics content expected at this grade level.
• AIS: This year, your child demonstrated the knowledge and skills required by the Mathematics Learning Standard.

When are Academic Intervention Services (AIS) required?

The Department has established four State-designated levels of performance. All public and charter school students who score below the State-designated performance level (performance level 3) must be provided academic intervention services, which must commence in the semester immediately following the administration of the test. For the 2010-11 school year only, the regulations for required extra help, or Academic Intervention Services (AIS), have been adjusted. The cut score for AIS will be identical to the 2009 score that required students to receive AIS (650). If the child scored below 650, the school is required to provide academic intervention services for the child. If the child scored a Level 2 but above the 650 score, then AIS policy is up to the school. For students scoring close to Level 3, monitoring the child's performance may be sufficient. It is up to the school to determine a plan for these services – parents should check with the child’s teacher or school officials.

The Elwood Board of Education has supported continued service for all Level 1 and Level 2 students in AIS programs within their buildings.

Questions about the ELA and/or Math tests:

How can I get a copy of the test?

The New York State Education Department’s Office of State Assessments posts the various assessments on the web at: http://www.nysedregents.org/testing/elaei/09exams/home.htm

How can I get a copy of my child’s test to see what questions my child got wrong on the test?

After all English Language Arts or Mathematics Tests have been scored and all scores have been recorded on students’ permanent records, a student and his or her parents/guardians have the right to review the student’s own test books and answer sheets. Test books and answer sheets should be reviewed in the presence of the principal or the principal’s designee to ensure that no changes are made as they are being reviewed. Copies of test books and answer sheets may be provided to students and their parents upon request after the scanning centers have returned the answer sheets to the district.

How do I know what questions belongs to which standard (ELA) or strand (Mathematics)?

The item maps linking question to test standard/strand can be found on the New York State Education Department’s web site at:
http://www.nysedregents.org/testing/elaei/09exams/home.htm

Who scores the tests?

It is the responsibility of the public school, public school district, nonpublic school, or charter school to score their own tests by using one of the following methods:

1. Regional Scoring
2. Schools from two districts
3. Three or more schools within a district
4. Two schools within a district
5. One school

Once the tests are scored locally, the answer documents are scanned by the local RIC or Big 5 scanning center. The data are then submitted to the Student Information Repository System (SIRS) and then sent to the contractor CTB McGraw-Hill for scaling, scoring and equating.

What happens if I think a child’s paper has been scored incorrectly?

When the teacher scoring committee completes the scoring process, test scores must be considered final and must be entered onto students’ answer sheets. Principals and other administrative staff in a school or district do not have the authority to set aside the scores arrived at by the teacher scoring committee and rescore student examination papers or to change any scores assigned through the procedures described in this manual and in the scoring materials provided by the Department. Any principal or administrator found to have done so, except in the circumstances described below, will be in violation of Department policy regarding the scoring of these tests. Teachers and administrators who violate Department policy with respect to scoring State examinations may be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Sections 3020 and 3020-a of Education Law or to action against their certification pursuant to Part 83 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. If an administrator has substantial reason to believe that the teacher scoring committee has failed to accurately score student answer papers on any examination, the administrator must first obtain permission in writing from the Office of State Assessment before arranging for or permitting a rescoring of student papers. The written request to the Office of State Assessment must come from the superintendent of a public school district or the chief administrative officer of a nonpublic or charter school and must include the examination title, date of administration, and number of students whose papers would be subject to such rescoring. This request must also include a statement explaining why the administrator believes that the teacher scoring committee failed to score appropriately and, thus, why he or she believes rescoring the examination papers is necessary. As part of this submission, the school administrator must make clear his or her understanding that such extraordinary re-rating may be carried out only by a full committee of teachers constituted in accordance with the scoring guidelines presented above and fully utilizing the scoring materials for this test provided by the Department. The Department occasionally finds it necessary to notify schools of a revision to the scoring key and rating guide for an examination. Should this occur after the scoring committee has completed its work, the principal is authorized to have appropriate members of the scoring committee review students’ responses only to the specific question(s) referenced in the notification and to adjust students’ final examination scores when appropriate. This is the only circumstance in which the school is not required to notify or obtain approval from the Department to correct students’ final examination scores. Questions concerning the administration of these tests should be directed to the Office of State Assessment at 518-474-5902 or 518-474-8220.

Harley Avenue Students...

Fill Their “Buckets” With Kindness
Students at Harley Avenue Primary School recently participated in an assembly on kindness, self-esteem, and respect. The program, based on Carol McCloud’s book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? explained to students that each person carries around an invisible bucket in which good thoughts and feelings are kept. When people’s buckets are full, they are happy; when the buckets are empty, they are sad.

During the assembly, “Bucket Filler” Peggy Johncox explained to students that they need to fill other people’s buckets by giving compliments, doing nice things for others, and helping out without being asked. “When you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill your own,” Ms. Johncox said. Overall, the metaphor of a bucket helped the young students learn the importance of being considerate and kind to others.

In addition to the student presentations, Harley teachers also participated in a special workshop, during which they learned how to incorporate “Bucket Filling” lessons into their curriculum.

Knight Pride Reigns At Elwood Homecoming 2010

In late September, the Elwood community united for the District’s annual Homecoming celebration. The weekend kicked off with a spirited high school pep rally the afternoon before, during which all fall sports teams were introduced. That evening, the high school hosted its annual Homecoming Dance, where seniors James DePace and Claudia Geib were crowned the Homecoming King and Queen.

The next morning, students from across the District marched in the parade while parents, fellow students, and Elwood residents cheered them on. Every graduating class from the high school proudly displayed their float, which each depicted a Pixar movie. The seniors captured first place with their “Finding Nemo” float, while the juniors’ “Up” depiction, the sophomores’ “Cars” representation, and the freshmen class’s “Wall-E” float also did not disappoint.

Following the parade, the John Glenn Knights battled against the Port Jefferson Royals for football glory. With a final score of 48-0, the Knights did not disappoint, thanks to the support of the energetic crowd.

Student Drop-Off Guidelines

If you drive your child to school, please read our “Drop Off Etiquette” guide.

1) Do not block roads or sit in intersections while waiting on line to get to the drop off point.

2) Once at the drop off point, children should exit the vehicle immediately from the side facing the building.
* Please have lunch money and after school plans already in place.

If there are issues that need to be resolved, simply pull over into the parking lot and take the time you need in a designated parking space.

3) There is no need to watch children walk into the building after they exit the vehicle. If it is a safety concern, we have it covered. We have ample staff in front of the buildings ensuring that nothing will happen to the children as they walk the few feet from the vehicle to the building. Please drop them off and GO! Please help keep the line moving.

Thanks for your consideration.

Third-Grade Students Celebrate Constitution Day

On September 17, third-grade students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District took time to celebrate Constitution Day, in recognition of the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787. Students in Ms. Held’s and Ms. Noon’s classes arrived at school dressed in red, white and blue on the special day. They gathered together and to sign the Constitution’s Preamble to a “Schoolhouse Rock” song, using sign language that they had learned only days earlier.

According to Ms. Held, “We try to do everything hands-on. A project like this really makes the Constitution come alive for the students and helps them to understand why it’s so important.” In addition to this activity, students formed their classes’ own Constitutions, which detail the rights that students have within the classroom.
