Since school buildings reopened in September, students within the Elwood School District have shown tremendous resiliency, but none more so than those at Harley Avenue Primary School. Amidst adjusting to new learning environments, these students have exceeded academic expectations and grown together in ways unlike in years past. 

Kindergarteners recently got in tune with their own “super” abilities and shared those unique characteristics with their classmates. Each equipped with a superhero name and cape, students shared how they’re super at “drawing pictures, dancing, sports and helping others.”

Down the hall, kindergarteners in Ms. LaBarbera and Ms. Schlieben’s class learned about President’s Day and the United States’ first president, George Washington. 

On Feb. 12, first graders in Ms. Palma’s class celebrated the Chinese New Year by learning how to write their first names in Chinese.

In Ms. McKenna’s first grade class, students recently decorated snowmen to hang in the hallway. While bringing some wintry cheer to the school, students also solved mathematical equations printed on each of their snowman’s top hat. 

Recently, second graders in Ms. Gallagher’s class worked on improving their writing skills. Students used their own experiences to write and illustrate their own non-fiction children’s books, complete with table of contents, captions and diagrams. 

In addition to academics, all grade level students have enjoyed the opportunity to unplug and decompress during physical education classes at Harley Avenue.
