To kick off a week of literacy at Elwood, students at Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate Schools recently celebrated National Read Across America Day.

This day of awareness, conceived by the National Education Association, seeks to help get children excited about reading, and to motivate them to read more.

At Boyd, third graders in Vita Kahler’s class read “The Highest Mountain of Books in the World” by Rocio Bonilla and proceeded to create their own mountain of books. Students drew leaning towers of their favorite books and shared them with their classmates.

A week later at Harley Avenue, students invited Erik Schmid from the Elwood Public Library to their classrooms for a Dr. Seuss reading event. Children’s librarians participated in pre-recorded book readings, played guitar and shared a bookmark craft with students to celebrate National Read Across America Day and encourage a love of reading.

Additionally, on March 3, third graders at Boyd participated in a variety of fun activities to celebrate “Third Grade Day” and “Wacky Wednesday.”
