Four Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Italian students recently placed in the top spots on the 2017 American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) National Italian Exam, with senior Michael Hermanns winning first place in the nation for the level five exam.

The three sophomores that obtained top spots for the level three exam included first place winner Ivan Andrade, second place winner Makenzy Chaikin and third place winner Samantha Rivera. All the students took the exams in March to test their skills in the Italian language. They began taking these tests in eighth grade to test their knowledge while competing to place nationally.

As a result of their top scores on the exams, Michael and Ivan have been awarded a two week all expenses paid trip to Italy this summer to immerse themselves in Italian culture.

“We both are very proud of our students and their achievements on this test,” said Italian teacher Elena Ferriolo. “This year we are proud to announce that we collectively had 34 students that received honorable mention for scoring above average nationally. We are also extremely proud of our students that placed at the top percentile nationally.”
