Dear Parents/Guardians,

I write to you with an extremely heavy heart regarding the news of the mass shooting that took place in Texas earlier today, claiming the lives of 14 children and one teacher. As a parent and educator, it is incomprehensible that a tragedy of this magnitude has happened once again within a school – one of the very places that our children should feel their safest. On behalf of our entire district, we offer our condolences to the families of Robb Elementary School and offer our support to the entire community of Uvalde during this time.

We understand that many within our school community – especially our younger students – may have a difficult time processing what has happened as they may see media reports or hear about the tragedy. As always, our teachers, administration and counseling staff are here for our students. We will support them in whatever way they need, taking the time to listen and offering the social and emotional care that they need at this time.

As you may be aware, over the past several years, our district has implemented a number of security protocols in an effort to provide a safe environment for our students and staff. These include (but are not limited to):

-Increased security staffing and patrols (our district employs only former law enforcement officers as our full-time security staffing)
-Regular collaboration with the SCPD and our School Resource Officer, Officer Jinks
-Increased surveillance using updated cameras/equipment
-Frequent lock down/lock out drills
-Swipe locks/Buzzer Entry
-Visitor Screening Protocols
-Raised awareness/training for all faculty and staff members
-Mental health screening protocols for students deemed "at-risk"

Earlier this evening I was in direct communication with County Executive Bellone. He confirmed that the Suffolk County Police Department would have increased patrols and high visibility at all schools, including Elwood, over the next several days. We appreciate the continued partnership with both the County and the SCPD in order to keep our students, faculty and staff safe.

We also appreciate your continued cooperation and patience with these procedures. Furthermore, we have reinforced with our staff the need to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior immediately. I ask for your continued partnership in this effort. If you "see something, say something".

Once again, please be assured that your children are our priority during this tragic time. If they are having difficulty, please let your child’s teacher, counselor, or building principal know immediately. Elwood is a safe place. The administration, faculty, staff and you, our parents and community members help to make it one. In both good times and bad times --- it takes a village. Thank you for being part of ours.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bossert
Superintendent of Schools
