It was a perfect fall day of crisp air and sunny skies as the proud Elwood community came together on Oct. 15 to march in the annual homecoming parade from James H. Boyd Intermediate School to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School.
Greenlawn and Commack Fire Department trucks led the way, followed by Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert, district administrators and Board of Education members; the John Glenn Marching Knights band, kickline and cheerleaders; homecoming King Colby Knorr and Queen Juliet Beuka; the high school’s classes and their colorful holiday-themed floats (Halloween for the seniors, Christmas for the juniors, Valentine’s Day for the sophomores and Easter for the freshmen); Elwood Middle School’s band and kickline; and local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops. The senior class won the float contest, despite a deduction of points for a rules violation.
The football Knights won their later battle in decisive fashion, defeating Port Jefferson in the homecoming game by a 34-0 score and improving their League IV record to 5-1. Quarterback Chris Franzese’s performance was a highlight, throwing for 125 yards and two touchdowns and running for 138 yards. Other offensive stars were Kahran King, who rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and Graig Decembre, who tallied six catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Mario Bento racked up seven tackles while Jack Smith boasted six tackles and two sacks, contributing mightily to the shutout.
The halftime show proved spectacular, with exciting performances by the cheerleaders and kickline. The marching band had the audience’s full attention with their set of nautical-themed music.
“It was a beautiful day and we appreciated everyone coming out to show their support for the Elwood community during homecoming, said John Glenn High School Principal Corey McNamara. “Thank you to all of our advisers for their guidance and especially to all of our students for their hard work and effort when involved in the many activities that surrounded the events of the week.”
