In a special lesson in time for Halloween, second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School learned all about the parts and functions of the human skull. They learned that their skulls are made up of two bones, the cranium and jaw. They also used their sense of touch to examine and make discoveries about their skulls, identifying soft spots and learning that there were actually holes in their craniums. The second graders were able to identify and name the seven holes in their skull – two eyes, two ears, two nostrils and one mouth – and learned about cartilage.

The students were very excited to actually hold a model cranium. In the culminating paper skull activity, students combined science with art to create masks that shared characteristics of their own skulls.
