A Message From the Principal

 


Dear John H. Glenn Students and Parents:

We hope you all had a relaxing and safe summer. We are so excited to begin school this fall. We have missed our students and staff tremendously. In order to ensure a healthy start of the year, we have put several safety measures in place. We will be holding a virtual PTA meeting on September 1 at 7:00 p.m. to go over our opening and safety protocols attached here.

As Dr. Bossert explained in his letter to the community earlier this month, we will have a staggered opening for all students (including fully remote) and each grade level will view a virtual orientation on September 8 to ready themselves for the start of a new school year. All incoming freshmen will be guided through a building tour by the Physical Education department on their first day of school, September 11th (Cohort B) and September 14th (Cohort A).

The staggered start will help to ensure that students and staff get acclimated to the new protocols and can safely engage in learning for the 2020-2021 school year. The schedule for our staggered reopening is as follows:

Cohort A : Students with the last name A-K Cohort B: Students with the last name L-Z.
September 10th- Only students in grades 11 and 12 in Cohort B (L - Z) will report to school. Students in grades 11 and 12 in Cohort A (A - K) will log on remotely. There is no school for 9th and 10th grade students on this day. Teachers websites will include a brief description of expectations for the day and directions for how students in Cohort A need to log on remotely. Students should check their teachers website prior to the first day of school. Students will follow an A day (Even day) schedule.
September 11th- Only students in grades 9 and 10 in Cohort B will report to school. Students in grades 9 and 10 in Cohort A will log on remotely. There is no school for 11th and 12th grade students on this day. Teachers websites will include a brief description of expectations for the day and directions for how students in Cohort A need to log on remotely. Students should check their teachers website prior to the first day of school. Students will follow a B day (Odd day) schedule.

We will then begin our first full week of our new schedule on September 14th as follows:

All students in Cohort A will report to school on September 14th and 15th and Cohort B will engage in remote instruction on those days.
All students in Cohort A and B will engage in remote instruction on September 16th.
All students in Cohort B will report to school on September 17th and 18th and Cohort A will engage in remote instruction on those days.
Moving forward for the school year:

Cohort A reports for live instruction on Monday and Tuesday and remote instruction on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Cohort B reports for live instruction on Thursday and Friday and remote instruction on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Additional Information:

BOCES Students- All BOCES programs are running every day. Students will take their standard bus to JGHS on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and take the BOCES bus from JGHS to their designated area. Upon return on the bus, they will follow their Cohort schedule and either stay in the building for the remainder of the day or stay on the bus to report home. On Wednesdays, students will take a bus to JGHS and then wait in the school lobby for the BOCES bus to their designated building. The BOCES bus will take students home directly from their assigned locations on Wednesdays.

Senior Parking- Student parking on the Elwood-John Glenn High School campus is a privilege that requires a Senior Class D Driver’s License. A DJ License is not acceptable. To apply for parking privileges, students must complete and return a parking application to the main office. Seniors who have a Class D Driver’s License may drive to school for the first few days as they wait for their parking sticker. Students who are given permission to park on campus will receive a parking sticker that must be affixed to the back of the rear view mirror and will be assigned a numbered spot.

Arrival, Dismissal and Bell Schedule:

Arrival Procedures- Students will be temperature screened as they enter the building. Students who arrive at school prior to 7:10 am,will report to the following locations and maintain social distancing with staff supervision:
(A-E; L-Q) - Cafeteria
(F-K; R-Z) - Gymnasium
At 7:15, students will be dismissed in a staggered format from the waiting locations and report to their period 1 classroom.

Dismissal Procedures- Dismissal times will be staggered to accommodate a safe and socially distanced dismissal.
Senior Student Drivers: will be dismissed first at 2:00 (A-E; H-K) and 2:05 (L-Q; T-Z)
Parent Pick up or Walkers: Parents will enter the student parking lot from Kenneth Ave and line up using the designated pick up lane. Parents must remain in their cars. Dismissal will be staggered as follows: 

A Cohort: 
2:10: A-D
2:20: E-H
2:30: I-K

B Cohort: 
2:10: L-O
2:20: P-S
2:30: T-Z

Bus Dismissal: will begin as buses arrive. Students will remain in their 9th period class and we will announce buses as they arrive over the PA system.
