Students in Christina Tellekamp’s fifth grade class at James H. Boyd Intermediate School learned about their classmates by designing flags representing their family history and culture.

Students interviewed their parents and grandparents and spent time in class drawing pictures and pasting photos of different foods, items and traditions that they felt best represented themselves and their families. On Sept. 27, they presented their flags to their classmates.

Ms. Tellekamp started the “Family Flag Project” five years ago. “We get to know and appreciate each other’s cultures and the students really enjoy it,” she said.
