Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students Lauren Hoolahan and Jack Schelin who recently received New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Suffolk Zone Awards.

Each year, two students from every high school in Suffolk County are recognized as the top male and female physical education students who exemplify a supreme level of physical education achievement, demonstrate leadership ability in school-wide activities and serve as outstanding role models for their peers and within their community.

Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Nurses David Shanahan described Lauren and Jack as “leaders” in physical education, commending them both on their “outstanding character.”

Lauren, a member of the school’s varsity basketball, soccer and softball teams, mentioned how the importance of physical education is only heightened in today’s digital age. She added, “Physical education has provided me with abilities that I take beyond gym class like leadership and teamwork.”

Jack, a member of the school’s varsity basketball and baseball teams, reflected fondly on his athletic journey at John Glenn High School. “Physical education has always provided me with an outlet from the multitude of stresses that all students face,” he said. I enjoy the comradery we build every day, and the relationships that we form will last a lifetime.”
