During the Elwood School District Board of Education meeting on Jan. 13, board members and district administration recognized the student winners of the 50th annual PTA Reflections art program from James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Harley Avenue Primary School. The contest provides elementary students with the opportunity to share their talents by expressing themselves in written and visual arts.
Boyd Principal Denise Toscano introduced the accomplished students from Boyd, in the categories of film production (winner Arden Moshos), literature (winner Bekalu Bitew and honorable mention earners Alexander Benavides, Janelle Reyes Garrido and Mikaela Rosa), music composition (winner Sally Ferruzzi), photography (winner Harper Moran and honorable mention earner Brayden Clancy), and visual arts (winner Mia Giacalone and honorable mention earner Johaib Mubeen); and from Harley Avenue, in the categories of photography (winner Kyle Clancy) and visual arts (winner Sienna Boremski and honorable mention earners Mya Campbell and Jolie Roman).
“We had a good number of students participate, and it was very difficult for the committee to go about selecting winners and representatives in each of the categories,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “We are very pleased to have those students and their families with us tonight, and to recognize them.”
The board also honored New York State Assemblyman Steve Stern for his contributions to Elwood’s schools.
“Assemblyman Stern has been a great supporter of our schools and our community,” Dr. Bossert said. “Recently he was able to identify a $40,000 aid payment for the district, to use at our discretion. We were exploring ways to help move our instructional technology program forward, and with this $40,000, we are able to start a replacement cycle of Smart Boards within the classrooms. Elwood was one of the first districts to invest in Smart Board technology and many of our boards are original. On behalf of myself, the board of education and the entire community, we want to say thank you to Assemblyman Stern, not only for the $40,000 grant, but also for his constant support of our schools, our community and our students.”
“It’s always my privilege to be supportive of this great school district and our wonderful community,” said Stern, who delivered proclamations recognizing the stellar season of John Glenn High School’s Lady Knights girls varsity volleyball team.
