The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education has appointed Maureen Hull as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and David Shanahan as the Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics.

Mrs. Hull has served the students of the Port Jefferson School District for the last 10 years, first as Director of English language arts and Social Studies, K-12, and more recently as the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. In her latter role, she was responsible for the implementation of several programs, including the Columbia Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Program, English as a New Language requirements, and several AP level course enhancements. She also presented new course proposals and other initiatives  to the Board of Education and was the lead evaluator and goal-setter for building principals and coordinator for K-12 staff development. She chaired the district’s Curriculum Development Council, as well as committees for Academic Intervention Services, and Professional Development

Mrs. Hull’s duties also included resolving parent concerns, and she takes pride in her emphasis on strong parent-teacher communication.

“I will work hard to support the priorities and goals of the district and ensure an excellent educational experience for the students, families and staff of the Elwood School District,” Mrs. Hull said

Prior to Port Jefferson, Mrs. Hull served as an Elementary Principal in the Comsewogue School District and an Assistant Principal in the Harborfields School District. She also directed band for the Harborfields and Amityville School Districts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Bard College, her Master’s in Music Education and her Professional Diploma in Educational Administration from LIU Post. Mrs. Hull is currently completing her doctorate studies at St. John’s University. She is focusing her work on Mindfulness.

David Shanahan arrived in Elwood in 1995 and has taught Health and Physical Education at John Glenn High School throughout that time. During his tenure with the district, he has also compiled an impressive resume as the head coach of the varsity football team with two Long Island championships, 12 Big 4 titles and six appearances in the County finals. Shanahan also coached middle school and JV lacrosse, as well as winter track. In addition, he served on the district committees for Health, Safety and Project Adventure.

“I look forward to working with the teachers, students, parents and administration to develop additional opportunities for students and continue to improve our program,” said Shanahan.

Prior to Elwood, Shanahan taught in the Sewanhaka Central High School District and served as a running backs coach for both LIU Post’s and Stony Brook University’s football programs. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from LIU Post, his Master’s degree from Stony Brook University, and school district and building leadership certificates from Dowling College..

Parents and staff alike will be happy to hear that Mrs. Hull  has been an innovative and dynamic leader in the areas of curriculum and staff development, covering all disciplines and grade levels and contributing mightily to some very high achieving programs. I look forward to having them both by my side as we continue to build on our successes in Elwood.”
