Focus on Five Fantastic Glenn Senior Athletes thumbnail209216

John Glenn High School recently recognized the outstanding efforts of five fantastic senior student-athletes: Shannon McGrath, Diana Muniz, Shayna Purow, Mackenzie Stickelman and Julian Weber. All have earned numerous accolades during their sports careers at Glenn.

McGrath, an outside hitter on the varsity girls volleyball team, was awarded first-team All-State, First-team All-Long Island, Suffolk County Elite Eight, All-County, two-time Suffolk All-Tournament Team MVP, New York State All-Tournament Team, All-Classification and Academic All-County honors. She was a key member of the state championship team that won the title last November. McGrath will be attending Union College, playing on the women’s volleyball team and majoring in biomedical engineering.

Muniz, who plays defense on the varsity girls volleyball team, was awarded first-team All-State, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Suffolk All-Tournament Team MVP, New York State All-Tournament Team, All-League, All-County and New York State Sportsmanship Award honors. She was also a key member of the state championship team that won the title last November. She is a member of the school’s World Language Honor Society. Muniz will graduate from Glenn with summa cum laude designation.

Purow, a setter on the varsity girls volleyball team, was awarded second-team All-State, New York State Tournament MVP, two-time All-Conference, three-time All-County, All-County Tournament MVP, All-League and Academic All-County honors. She was also a key member of the state championship team that won the title last November. She was part of the Glenn team that won first place overall in the Feinstein Institute of Northwell Health’s Medical Marvels competition. She will graduate from Glenn with summa cum laude designation. Purow will be attending Colby College, playing on the women’s volleyball team.

Stickelman, who plays midfield, defense and forward on the girls varsity soccer team, was awarded League Player of the Year (as a junior, a first in Glenn soccer history), three-time All-State, two-time All-Long Island, four-time All-County and two-time Top 100 Long Island honors. She also competes in track, where she earned All-Division and All-League designation. Stickelman plays in Glenn’s marching band and band honors ensemble, and is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, Natural Helpers and Freshman Buddies. She will graduate from Glenn with magna cum laude designation. Stickelman will attend Boston University, where she has earned an athletic scholarship.

Weber, a goalkeeper on the varsity boys soccer team, was awarded All-State, second-team All-Long Island, All-County, All-League and All-Conference honors; earned an award for more than 10 shutouts; and was named League Goalkeeper of the Year in his senior year. He has signed to semi-pro team Queensboro FC.

“The Elwood School District is extraordinarily proud of these five student athletes,” said Athletic Director Dave Shanahan. “Their accomplishments in the classroom and on the athletic field have allowed each of these athletes to receive the highest accolades given by their selected sports’ governing bodies.”
