Elwood-John H. Glenn High School junior Elliot Baravarian’s work in earning his Girl Scouts Gold Award led to him recently receiving the Trevor Project’s prestigious Action in Advocacy Award.
The Gold Award recognizes scouts who demonstrate a commitment to public service by developing innovative and sustainable projects that have a measurable impact. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Baravarian chose to address the importance of effective allyship, an issue that holds personal significance for him. For his “Effective Allyship Matters” project, he tackled the issue of limited awareness about the importance of allyship in supporting the LGBTQ+ community, committing over 10 months and more than 130 hours to his project. Baravarian created a comprehensive website designed to centralize information and resources about the LGBTQ+ community. To further extend the reach of his project, he developed and distributed brochures containing the same valuable information. In an effort to raise awareness and foster community engagement, he organized and hosted informational tables at local events and celebrations, including Northport’s Pride in the Park, where he was interviewed by the New York Times. During these events, Baravarian not only shared resources but also courageously shared his personal experiences. His commitment to service also led him to organize food and hygiene supply drives, with donations directly benefiting the local Pride for Youth organization. He also used his project funds to enhance the LGBTQ+ book catalog at the Elwood Public Library by purchasing and donating a selection of books that promote understanding and inclusivity.
Baravarian’s exemplary work and leadership were recognized on March 14 by the Trevor Project, who presented him with the Action in Advocacy Award in recognition of his outstanding dedication, advocacy and commitment to creating a more affirming world for LGBTQ+ youth. Founded in 1998, the Trevor Project is a national nonprofit organization supporting LGBTQ+ people from ages 13-24. This national recognition for Baravarian further highlights the significant impact of his efforts in raising awareness about allyship, organizing community outreach and providing valuable resources, and serves as a powerful example for his peers and the broader community.
“I’ve thought about the Trevor Project for a really long time,” Baravarian said. “They do a lot of really great work, and it feels really good for them to acknowledge my project, and I am very proud and honored.”
