Elwood Middle School held a banner ceremony on May 25, celebrating the school’s recent Schools to Watch designation by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. Schools to Watch representatives were in attendance along with school and district administrators, Board of Education members, school staff and selected students and community members. The impressive banner was donated by Lifetouch.

Statewide, EMS was one of only two middle schools statewide to receive the initial designation this year and only one of 38 middle schools out of 600 to receive this recognition since the program was established.

“Five years ago, all of us embarked on this journey to take Elwood Middle School to the next level and become a model middle school, and we have done that together,” Principal Dr. Christina Moran said, thanking her staff and teachers as well as parents. “This is not any one person’s award, this belongs to the middle school and the community.”

“This has really been a team effort,” concurred Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who thanked Dr. Moran for “waving the baton” in leading the entire school, and the students for embracing the building’s many efforts and changes. “In my opinion, Elwood Middle School has always been a school to watch. I believe that the work taking place under this roof for a very period of time stands above what happens in any other district. I am extremely proud of our students and what they have been able to do, and the accomplishments of our faculty and staff that help them to get there.”
